Germany trashed Argentina 4-0 thanks to goals from Miroslav Klose, who grabbed a brace, Thomas Muller and Arne Frederick. Billed as the match of this world cup, that quarterfinal petered out into a tame one with Germany bossing possession at the beginning as well as at the end. Coach Joachim Loew will be delighted with his sides showing and will hope they can march on into the final. He will be without Muller who picked up a second booking in the tournament in the game against Argentina.

Meanwhile Spain labored to a 1-0 win over Paraguay in a tension-filled match. Spain was unable to break a solid Paraguay defence and struggled to create chances. Both sides had a chance to seal the game when they won a penalty each, but Oscar Cardozo and Xabi Alonso were unable to take these chances. It was in the closing stages that a piece of magic from Andreas Iniesta allowed David Villa to slot home his fifth goal of the world cup and seal the win. Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has all his players available, but may opt to start with Cesc Fabregas as star striker Fernando Torres has appeared off-color so far.
