Yes, Ward beat Kessler, though, while everyone has given him the credit for it, nobody in their right mind thought Kessler looked good that night. So, in fact, Ward beat a lost, empty Kessler by headbutting and elbowing him into a concussive state, which as everyone agrees, on the night, he probably didn’t have to do. He looked quick and strong, unlike Kessler. Does this mean Ward is now a proven world beater? I don’t think it does. Not in a month of sundays.
If we can just put this fight into context for a moment. I was one of those expecting a good win from Kessler and I did raise an eyebrow at the way Ward stepped up. However, Kessler was not the Kessler of old. Not the pre-Calzaghe Kessler. He hadn’t fought for a year before his previous opponent Perdomo, against whom he didn’t look terrible, but definitely appeared to be rusty. Then he loses badly while looking comatose to Ward. The proof of the pudding will be Kessler v Froch. If Kessler is still looking empty and lost, then I’m afraid to say, Ward’s win against a shadow of Kessler was also empty.
Sadly for the rising star, I feel this will be the case and if he is not careful, he will become a victim of his own hype if he begins to believe it.
I’ve heard it said that Green will shy away of Ward’s power but, in my opinion, with the exception of Mikkel Kessler, Green has fought the better quality of opponent and has better power than Ward all day long, backed up by his superior knockout rate.
Green is coming in as the underdog in most people’s eyes, and this takes all the pressure off his shoulders, he doesn’t have a title or an unbeaten record to worry about losing either, which can only work in his favour. If Green can bring his A-game, then he is capable of beating the over-hyped Ward convincingly. On the other hand, as long as Ward keeps his feet on the ground and isn’t surrounded by yes-man idiots, he will be taking Green a lot more seriously than the casual boxing fan would believe, and has every chance of getting a second win.
