Japan have had much success in the Asian Cup, winning the tournament no fewer than three times (1992, 200 and 2004) while finishing in fourth place in 2007. The relatively recent years in which Japan have been successful in the competition goes to prove how far the standard of Japanese football has come over the years.

The Japanese qualified for the finals in Qatar thanks to a first placed finish in Group A. Out of the six matches they played, they won five of them and only lost the won, this coming in a 1-0 away defeat in Bahrain.

Jordan have had no success whatsoever in the 55 year history of the competition. Their qualification in to the 2011 competition came courtesy of a second placed finish in Group E (behind Iran) with eight points.
