Tonight is one of the signature pay-per-view events in the wrestling world, in line with Wrestlemania, Survivor Series and Summerslam – it’s the WWE Royal Rumble preview. The TD Garden in Boston will host the event, which features the most unique match in the annual wrestling calendar – a 40 man over-the-top-rope Royal Rumble match, with the winner going on to a championship match in the main-event of Wrestlemania.

Who will be competing in this year’s WWE Royal Rumble? The short answer: Everyone. And then some. All of the biggest names in both the Raw and Smackdown brand will find their way into the match, and there are a huge range of possibilities regarding who is going to be the man (or woman) standing alone at the end of the event.

Every year some ‘historical’ WWE figures make a return to the Rumble event, but it is unlikely that a surprise entrant will make their mark this year. Many of the storylines leading up to the event have left the door open for upper-mid card wrestlers on both brands to take a leap into the big stage.

As with all WWE Royal Rumble previews, there should be a prediction. Many fans have pointed towards a Randy Orton v John Cena main event at Wrestlemania, and from a neutral standpoint, that would be the matchup between the two biggest stars in wrestling right now.

With that in mind, there are two possibilities: If Orton wins the WWE Title, the match could be made by John Cena being the last of the 40 competitors. But what if Orton doesn’t win the match? If The Miz somehow manages to hold on to the strap, perhaps with outside help from his ‘assistant’ Alex Riley, then where would that leave Orton vs Cena?

The answer: In its rightful place, on top of the card for Wrestlemania. Some of the greatest matches in WWE history have not been championship matches, and in fact, a three month feud between Cena and Orton would not the heat of the title to warm it up. Their battle, especially with the injection of a celebrity or two (it wouldn’t be Wrestlemania if there wasn’t a special guest referee!), and perhaps a slight ‘angry’ turn for Cena to compete with the Viper’s killer instinct, would send buy-rates for Wrestlemania into the stratosphere.
