New Zealand goes into the Test without wing Cory Jane from last weekend's Test against Australia while injured hooker Andrew Hore is still not recovered sufficiently to take his place in the side. Andrew Sheridan returns to England after shoulder surgery while first five-eighths Jonny Wilkinson was unable to take his place in the side.

After their loss to Australia, New Zealand could reflect on being below the sort of form which made them such a force in the Tri Nations. Whether that was down to absence from tough match play for many of the side or a suggestion the side had peaked for the year will be tested by England. The home side goes into the match after an intensive build-up but without any match play as a combination since the June internationals against Australia.

New Zealand No.8 Kieran Read and blindside flanker Jerome Kaino have played in the shadow of captain Richie McCaw this season, but each made significant contributions to the effort against Australia last week. Owen Franks and Tony Woodcock shaped up with strength against the Australians but face a more rigorous line-up this week. New cap Sonny Bill Williams impressed at ITM Cup level but is at a different plane and up against a season campaigner in Mike Tindall. Samuel Whitelock has also been entrusted with a starting role in one of his biggest tests at international level. England's halfback Ben Youngs has been a niggly performer for the side while first five Toby Flood has a chance to push for a more permanent role in the side. Lewis Moody also has the potential to push McCaw in the loose.
