In what is clearly a do-or-die situation for Robin Soderling, the mighty Swede takes on former world number one Roger Federer for a chance to remain in the yearend battle at the 2010 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, here in London at the fantastic O2 Arena.



Soderling opened the Grand Finale on a disappointing note when he lost his first Round Robin match to home favourite Andy Murray rather handily. Then came a power packed performance against Spanish No.2 David Ferrer, where Soderling brought his A-game to the fore to clinch victory. Infact, Soderling is enjoying a very good form, the finest testimonial of which was his victory at the Paris Masters two weeks ago. Consistent performances at Grand Slam level resulted in a career high ranking of No.4 which will definitely see a further rise next year if not immediately.



Federer, on the other hand, is in ruthless form. The Swiss maestro registered clinical wins over Ferrer and Murray to top the Group B standings. With a semifinal spot almost ensured, Federer is hoping to snatch another confidence boosting win ahead of the last four stage. The Swiss did not enjoy a similar form throughout the season. After his famous major triumph in Australia, Federer suffered disappointing losses to players like Marcos Baghdatis, Albert Montanes and Ernests Gulbis before finding top form in Cincinnati where he won his 17th Masters series crown. With a couple of more titles in Stockholm and Basel, Federer improved his title tally with a hope for a respectable season finish. Whether he claims his fifth yearend title or not is a question still to be answered, but this certainly will come as a consolation to an otherwise struggling year in Swiss' career.
